The Economic Times daily newspaper is available online now. Read Today's Paper Jio makes its D-Street debut: What it means for Reliance Industries investors and the road aheadBy Kumar Gaurav, ETMarkets.comLast Updated: Oct 28, 2026, 10:34:00 AM ISTSynopsis

Jio Platforms’ stock market debut has brought its standalone valuation into focus, raising questions about value unlocking for Reliance Industries shareholders. Analysts weigh the outlook for Jio and RIL, the holding-company discount, and the growth drivers shaping their investment cases.

With Jio Platforms making its D-Street debut on Wednesday, the focus for Reliance Industries investors shifts to the extent of value unlocking for the parent company and what lies ahead for its businesses.

Jio Platforms shares made a strong debut, listing at Rs 1,358 apiece, a 21.35% premium to the IPO price of Rs 1,119 after the telecom giant raised around Rs 30,200 crore through what was India’s largest-ever initial public offering, marking a significant milestone for Reliance Industries.

Analysts believe Jio’s standalone valuation will provide greater visibility into the value of RIL’s stake in the telecom and digital services business. However, the extent of value unlocking for shareholders will depend on how the market values Reliance’s other businesses and Jio’s ability to sustain growth.

What Jio’s listing means for RIL investors

Jio Platforms’ listing, analysts said, could be a key value-unlocking trigger for Reliance Industries shareholders, giving investors a clearer picture of the telecom and digital business’s standalone worth. However, the extent to which this translates into gains for RIL shareholders will depend on how the market values the parent company’s remaining businesses and accounts for its holding in Jio.

    Live Events

“Jio’s listing is set to unlock real value for RIL shareholders. Until now, Jio’s performance has been tucked away inside a gigantic conglomerate, where its true worth was not captured accurately. Once it trades on its own, every shift in Jio’s market value will show up directly in RIL’s valuation, since RIL holds about two-thirds of the company,” said Manav Medewala, research analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan.

The listing could also help narrow the valuation discount at which RIL has historically traded. However, Medewala cautioned that the market would scrutinise Reliance’s other businesses more closely, while Jio’s quarterly performance, particularly tariffs, average revenue per user (ARPU) and 5G monetisation, would attract greater attention.

Anil R, senior research analyst at Geojit Investments, said Jio’s listing would provide independent price discovery and greater visibility into the value of RIL’s core businesses, including retail, oil-to-chemicals (O2C) and new energy.

“For RIL shareholders, Jio’s listing is primarily a value-unlocking event, providing independent price discovery and greater visibility into the value of RIL’s core businesses, including retail, O2C and new energy. The key question post-listing will be how much of Jio’s standalone valuation translates into RIL’s market value. While the listing should enhance SOTP transparency, a holding-company discount may persist given RIL’s diversified structure,” Anil said.

According to him, the next phase of RIL’s re-rating will increasingly depend on value creation across its retail, new energy and O2C businesses, beyond the contribution from Jio.

RIL or Jio: Which stock should you buy?

With Jio offering a direct investment avenue into India’s telecom and digital businesses, investors now have two distinct ways to participate in Reliance’s growth story. The choice depends on their preferred exposure, risk appetite and the valuations at which the two stocks trade.

Investors seeking diversified exposure to oil-to-chemicals, Reliance Retail, new energy and other businesses may prefer RIL, which still holds about two-thirds of Jio. Those looking for a more focused bet on telecom and digital services may consider Jio, while factoring in sector-specific regulatory risks and capital expenditure requirements.

“The choice depends on the kind of exposure an investor seeks. Those looking for a diversified play across oil-to-chemicals, Reliance Retail, New Energy, and other ventures should stay with RIL, which retains about two-thirds of Jio and so keeps telecom growth in the mix. Investors wanting a pure-play bet on India’s telecom and digital story, with its tariff, data and 5G drivers, are better served by Jio shares, while accepting sector-specific regulatory and capital-spending risks,” Medewala said.

Anil said the two stocks would offer different investment propositions, with Jio providing concentrated exposure to telecom and digital growth, while RIL offers diversification across telecom, retail, new energy and O2C.

“Post-listing, Jio and RIL will offer investors two distinct investment propositions. Jio provides a focused play on India’s telecom and digital growth opportunity, while RIL offers diversified exposure across Jio, retail, new energy and O2C. The trade-off is clear: Jio offers concentrated growth exposure, while RIL provides diversification but carries O2C cyclicality and investment needs across emerging businesses. Ultimately, the choice will come down to growth visibility and relative valuations,” Anil said.

However, a direct investment in Jio may not necessarily deliver superior returns if its listing valuation already factors in much of its anticipated growth.

What lies ahead for Jio and RIL?

Going forward, Jio’s ability to sustain its valuation, analysts said, will depend on its capacity to monetise its subscriber base, improve ARPU and expand revenue streams beyond traditional telecom services.

Tariff increases, greater data consumption and the monetisation of 5G services will remain important factors for investors to track. The scaling up of broadband, enterprise, cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) services could also create additional growth opportunities for Jio.

Anil said these factors would be critical to sustaining Jio’s valuation premium and unlocking further value for RIL shareholders.

For Reliance Industries, the focus will extend beyond Jio. The performance of Reliance Retail, the profitability and cyclicality of its O2C business, and the pace at which its new energy investments translate into meaningful growth will influence the company’s broader earnings outlook and valuation.
